Back in April 2022, I embarked on a one-week trip to Milan with my younger sister. The fashion capital of Italy is a vibrant metropolis renowned for its rich history, cultural landmarks, and bustling city life. Whether you are a fashion enthusiast, an art aficionado, a foodie, or simply a curious traveller, Milan offers a myriad of experiences that are sure to captivate your senses and leave you with lasting memories. In this post, you will discover some of the top things to do in Milan, from iconic landmarks to hidden gems, to help you make the most of your visit to this dynamic city.
Duomo di Milano
The grand Gothic cathedral of Milan ranks as the largest church in Italy and the third largest in Europe. Majestically presiding over the expansive piazza and the city itself, it has served as Milan’s focal point for centuries. This architectural marvel, spanning five centuries of construction, boasts an impressive array of 3,500 statues. Visitors can marvel at its 135 spires up close by ascending to the rooftop via lift or stairs.
Upon entering, be sure to direct your attention just left of the altar to behold one of Milan’s most renowned art pieces: Saint Bartholomew Flayed, crafted in the 16th century by Marco d’Agrate. Additionally, keep a lookout for a tiny red light located in the dome directly above the apse. This light signifies the purported location where a nail, believed to be from the crucifixion of Christ, was once housed.

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II
Inaugurated by King Vittorio Emanuele II in 1867, the Galleria is a must-visit destination when exploring the city, even if just for 15 minutes. It serves as a link between the Piazza del Duomo and La Scala. Beyond its function as an upmarket shopping arcade, it has served as a backdrop to 140 years of protest marches. As the oldest and arguably grandest mall in Milan, it exudes stunning architectural beauty. Inside, you will discover an array of luxury shops and upscale dining establishments.

La Scala
Recognised as the epitome of opera for over two centuries, La Scala assumed its current form in 1778 and emerged as a symbol of Italian defiance against Austrian dominance during the 19th century. Attending a performance at La Scala is a top-notch experience in Milan, especially for opera enthusiasts. Not only is the theatre itself breathtaking, but it also boasts a captivating museum that delves into its rich history.
To secure tickets for opera, ballet, or a tour, it is advisable to book in advance. This ensures access to both the theatre and its museum. While last-minute tickets may occasionally be available, this is not the norm, given the venue’s global renown and high demand.

Santa Maria Delle Grazie
A visit to Santa Maria delle Grazie, one of Milan’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, is a must for one compelling reason: inside lies the renowned mural of the Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci. This masterpiece, located within the convent’s refectory, is best experienced by booking tickets in advance, as they tend to sell out quickly. Additionally, booking this tour grants you access to explore the old refectory of the monastery and ample time to admire the world-famous Last Supper painting.
The Santa Maria delle Grazie church, a former Dominican convent that shelters the renowned mural, showcases exquisite Italian Renaissance architecture, with a particular emphasis on Lombardian style. Its intricate detailing offers a visual feast, while Giovanni Donato’s Crucifixion stands as another remarkable fresco worthy of admiration.
Regrettably, my sister and I were unable to make time for a visit, but we hope to explore it another time for sure!

Cimitero Monumentale
Now, this might seem a bit eerie, and it might not be everyone’s preference, but let me explain. Visiting the Monumental Cemetery is amongst the top experiences in Milan for those interested in historic tombs and artistic mausoleums. I spent nearly two hours exploring it, and I found it truly enjoyable!
This expansive cemetery hosts a stunning array of 19th- and 20th-century sculptures. The artistic styles showcased across its numerous tombs and monuments span from contemporary to classical, featuring works by esteemed artists, designers, and architects like Adolfo Wildt or Carlo Maciachini. Some of these structures are quite imposing in size. Over the past two centuries, this cemetery has served as the final resting place for numerous prominent Italian figures, including artists and politicians, and some of the region’s most notable families, including the Campari family tomb, the Morgagni family monument, and the awe-inspiring Mausoleum of Antonio Bernocchi.
A guided tour of the cemetery is highly recommended to delve into the fascinating individual stories, many of which are intricately intertwined with Italy’s rich cultural tapestry.

The Canals
If you are longing for a taste of Venice, a leisurely stroll along the Darsena Canal is a delightful choice. Milan was once crisscrossed by a network of navigli (canals), serving as vital trade routes connecting the city to the countryside. Although many have vanished over time, the banks of the two remaining canals, along with the basin where they converge, have emerged as the city’s vibrant hub for dining, drinking, perusing antique shops, or leisurely strolling along the water’s edge. These ancient waterways offer a refreshing change of pace from the city’s historical landmarks. Upon arrival, meander along the canal’s banks and pause at the charming cafes, bars, and restaurants dotted along the route.
Situated southwest of the city centre, the area is conveniently accessible by foot from Porta Genova on Metro line 2.
The National History Museum
Renowned for its extensive collection of family-friendly exhibits exploring nature and science, The Museum of Natural History of Milan stands as one of the city’s most prominent cultural institutions. This museum is highly sought-after by visitors, offering an enriching experience that is well worth your time. Given its popularity, be prepared for crowds when planning your visit. Especially during peak seasons, such as in Milan, the museum can become even busier, so it is advisable to plan accordingly.
Located on Corso Venezia, the Museum of Natural History of Milan takes visitors on an enthralling journey through the marvels of the natural world. Its exhibits encompass a broad spectrum of topics, ranging from biodiversity and palaeontology to mineralogy. Visitors can marvel at lifelike dioramas, examine ancient fossils, and engage with interactive displays, all of which offer profound insights into Earth’s diverse ecosystems.
With its emphasis on education and conservation, the museum provides an immersive experience for nature enthusiasts, making it an ideal destination for families, students, and anyone intrigued by the wonders of the natural environment.
