Before my first (school) trip to Belgium a few years ago, I wondered, ’Is Belgium worth visiting?’ I eventually saw for myself and I must say, I never regretted it. Since then, others have asked me the same question, curious about my experiences, activities, and whether I would return. This inspired me to write this article on the top reasons to visit Belgium — because yes, you absolutely should!
Belgium, often overshadowed by its larger European neighbours, is a hidden gem that offers a rich tapestry of history, culture, and culinary delights. Nestled between France, Germany, and the Netherlands, this small but vibrant country promises a variety of experiences that cater to every type of traveler. Here are some compelling reasons to make Belgium your next travel destination.
Architectural Marvels
The first and most obvious reason to visit Belgium is its incredible architecture, scenic small towns by lakes, and vibrant cities like Antwerp, which offer a wealth of experiences despite their larger size. Bruges, undeniably the biggest tourist attraction in Belgium, is picturesque, charming, and quaint — making it my favourite town in the whole country. Whilst the streets are bustling with tourists in the warmer months, visiting in the colder months early in the year (excluding the busy December holiday season) offers a quieter experience.
But don’t just visit Belgium for Bruges! Another favourite destination in Belgium is Antwerp, a larger city often referred to as the fashion capital of the country. Antwerp is a more enjoyable visit than Brussels, boasting a vibrant coffee culture, small boutiques, and excellent local designers. It is an ideal spot for those in their 20s and 30s to relax and explore for a few days.

Gastronomic Delights
Belgium is a paradise for food lovers. Famous for its chocolates, the country is home to some of the world’s best chocolatiers. A visit to Brussels is incomplete without indulging in pralines from renowned shops like Pierre Marcolini and Neuhaus. Belgium’s culinary repertoire also includes hearty dishes such as moules-frites (mussels and fries), stoofvlees (beef stew), and waffles, which come in both the Brussels and Liège varieties. Belgian waffles are popular throughout Europe and the rest of the world, but nowhere do they taste better than in Belgium itself. And let’s not forget Belgian beer, with a brewing tradition that dates back centuries and includes Trappist and Abbey beers.
Art and Culture
Art enthusiasts will find Belgium particularly rewarding. The country has produced a wealth of artistic talent, from the Flemish Masters like Rubens and Van Eyck to surrealist painter René Magritte. Brussels is home to the Magritte Museum, while Antwerp showcases the works of Rubens at the Rubenshuis. The vibrant street art scene in cities like Ghent adds a modern twist to Belgium’s artistic landscape.
Festivals and Events
Belgians love a good celebration, and the country’s calendar is packed with festivals and events. The Carnaval de Binche, recognised by UNESCO for its cultural significance, features elaborate costumes and lively parades. Tomorrowland, one of the world’s largest electronic dance music festivals, attracts visitors from all over the globe. For a taste of local tradition, the Ghent Festival and Brussels Flower Carpet are must-see events.
Scenic Landscapes
Beyond its cities, Belgium offers a variety of natural landscapes. The Ardennes region, with its rolling hills, dense forests, and charming villages, is perfect for hiking, cycling, and outdoor adventures. The Belgian coast, stretching along the North Sea, provides sandy beaches and seaside resorts such as Knokke-Heist and Ostend, ideal for a relaxing getaway.
Ease of Travel
Belgium’s compact size and excellent transportation network make it easy to explore. The country’s efficient train system connects major cities and towns, allowing for convenient day trips. Brussels, as the de facto capital of the European Union, is well-connected by air, rail, and road, making it an accessible destination from anywhere in Europe.
Warm and Welcoming People
Belgians are known for their hospitality and friendliness. Whether you are navigating the bustling streets of Brussels or the quiet alleys of Bruges, you will find locals who are more than willing to help and share their love for their country. The multilingual nature of Belgium, with Dutch, French, and German as official languages, also means you are likely to find someone who speaks your language.
In conclusion, Belgium offers a rich and diverse experience that is sure to captivate any traveler. From its breathtaking architecture and historical sites to its world-renowned cuisine and vibrant cultural scene, there are countless reasons to visit this enchanting country. Belgium is anything but boring, and it definitely deserves a spot on your European itinerary. It is an excellent country to explore for a few days, especially if you are travelling along popular train routes from Paris to the Netherlands and beyond. While a brief visit to Brussels is worthwhile, the true charm of Belgium lies outside the capital. Take a short train ride to the picturesque towns of Bruges and Ghent or venture further to Antwerp. There are countless reasons to visit Belgium, and these are just a few of my favourites.
So pack your bags and prepare to discover the magic of Belgium!
